A gay man lives with a lonely old lady in a demolished house in Berlin. One day the old lady's daughter stands in front of the door and wants to bring her mother home.
Professor Mauthner, after many years of exile (having emigrated in 1933 to the USA), returns to Germany in 1948. He can in fact return to his teaching post, but the rejection and petty intrigues of his reactionary colleagues and students make his work almost unbearable.
A biopic of the singer and film actor Joseph Schmidt. The title is a reference to his best-known song and a 1933 film of the same title in which he starred.
