Small provincial town at the end of the 19th century. Barber Hakob is a passionate pigeon-admirer with them finding his peace of mind and filling the dullness of provincial life with poetry. Soon he is forced to choose his pigeon loft or his daughter's happiness.
In their first collaboration Melkonian and cinematographer Mikhail Vartanov film two neighbour families that both claim ownership of a huge mulberry tree growing in the middle of their two houses.
The hero of the film is a young director who goes to prison to study the psychology of those sentenced to death. The main actions take place in the cell of those sentenced to death.
