A school teacher from a small town in Poland comes to Warsaw to see his estranged wife, a window dresser, in the hope that she will return to him rather than give him a divorce.
Bronka, Franka, Amelka and Kwiryna are four girls living in the same poor district of Warsaw and going to the same school. They all fight for a better future but what the future brings is usually disappointment, sometimes even tragedy.
The school incident of the disappearance of a watch became a pretext for the filmmakers to faithfully show an interesting social layer, to present the life of the school community, Agnieszka's conflicts with her parents and the emerging sympathy for a boy.
